Welcome to Law Beat where we believe that the first line of defence against fraud and scams is some knowledge of the law.

Since principles of law can be a bit dry at times we have created Law Beat, a fun way to learn aspects of the law.

Each part that we present will set out basic law principles followed by one or two cases to test what you have learned. Once you have tried your hand at the questions, click on the answer to see if your opinion was right.

The first parts in the series and the related questions are straightforward. However, as you progress through our series, the questions will become tougher because they will test not only the information that you learned in the related part, but as well information that you learned in previous parts. That is when the law gets quite fun.

So if you are ready, the first part in this Learn the Law series is: What is a contract? Part 1

In Part 5, we look at the concepts of acceptance in a little more detail. "In what circumstances can you not accept an offer"

If you have any topics related to the one discussed in the series, let us know and we will try to deal with it in the upcoming parts.

    Lighter Side of Law
Prosecutor: Did you kill the victim?
    Defendant: No, I did not.
Prosecutor: Do you know what the penalties are for perjury?
Defendant: Yes, I do. And they're a lot better than the penalty for murder.
Here are some actual exchanges between lawyers and witnesses in the court room.
"Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning?"
"The youngest son, the twenty-year old, how old is he?"
"Were you present when your picture was taken?"
Q: "Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?"
    A: "No."
Q: "Did you check for blood pressure?"
    A: "No."
Q: "Did you check for breathing?"
    A: "No."
Q: "So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?"
    A: "No."
Q: "How can you be so sure, Doctor?"
A: "Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar."
Q: "But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?"
A: "It is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere."
"Was it you or your younger brother who was killed in the war?"
