  • Explain that information is collected on the web to create customer lists which are then sold to advertisers. Where the child leaves such information can give clues to his or her preferences. For example leaving your email address at a specific music site permits music advertisers to target your email.

  • Forewarn your child about undesirable sites on the net that they should stay away from. Let them know that there are people on the net who try to sexually exploit children and who might try to contact them at chat rooms or other sites.

What can you, the parent, do?

  • Keep the computer in a room open to everyone.

  • Monitor your telephone and credit card bill for unknown numbers or charges.

  • Have your child use a gender neutral user name. Girls tend to get more attention than others on the net.

  • Travel with your kids on the net.

  • Limit your child's use of the net.

  • Pick out with your child, sites that are safe for the kids to visit.

  • Talk to your child about the net.

  • Restrict their posting messages on the net or responding to email with only your consent.

  • Purchase software filters that allow you to restrict their visits to appropriate sites. Filters are not foolproof but they can help.

  • Purchase filters that can control the type of email you get.
