Protecting Your Privacy - Rules for Parents

While you may have learn about the dangers of the net and how your privacy can be disclosed on the internet, your children will probably be unaware of how privacy can be unconsciously divulged.

The Internet is one of the best ways for a child to explore the world. A child can visit any country and learn just about anything on the net. Your child can do this through the world wide web, chat rooms, newsgroups, email and other online applications.

Here are some tips that you can convey to your child so that his or her surfing on the web will be safe:

  • Advise your child never to give out your password on the net. Explain that with a password, a fraudster can abuse your email account or your internet service accounts by posing as you.

  • Tell your child to not give out any personal information without your consent. This would include his or her name, phone number, address, email address, school name and any other personal and confidential information.

  • Inform your child how personal information can be unconsciously disclosed. For example:
