- Get as much information from the seller as to his name, address and phone number and independently try to verify such information. For instance, check his name in the applicable phone book to see whether his address and phone number match.
- Anytime you send your credit card information by email over the internet or use it at a website, that information is being communicate across the internet where it can be intercepted by an unauthorized third party. Any such information should be encrypted using the latest technology or only divulged at a secure site. Don't be fooled by claims that you don't need to encrypt such information. - Never give out your credit card information as a means of identity or age verification. The credit card was never intended to be used as such and in fact is not a good method of verifying age or identity.
- Never give out your credit card information unless it is for a specific purpose and it is absolutely necessary such as in the case of your purchasing an item. Beware of websites who ask you for you credit card information even if the website is only offering a free service. If the service is to be provided free, there is no need to disclose information about your credit card.
- Finally, if you think you have been scammed, report the scam to our Complaint Centre and your local Better Business Bureau. You may also want to contact your local Enforcement Agency to assist you in investigating the scam.
