  • The cost of hiring additional system administrators to deal with problems caused by bulk e-mail traffic or retaliation from frustrated recipients.

  • Much spam contains hoaxes which cause the recipient to act on to his or her detriment. If the spam is a scam, the cost of customer that might be lost due to the fraud such as the requirement to call international numbers to get off spammed lists or to respond to frauds requiring call backs.

  • The cost of the time it takes to filer or remove the spam from a recipient's mailbox.

  • Some newsgroups have been choked by the number of spam messages making the newsgroup undesirable to visit.
