Online Credit Repair Tips
Online Credit Repair refers to a service of removing negative information on a credit report for a fee. The fee is paid and the information is not removed since it is illegal to remove accurate information from a credit report. Be aware of the following facts before falling for this scam:
- It is illegal to change any information, negative or otherwise, from a credit report unless there is an inaccuracy. Neither you nor any company you might hire can change any correct information that has been properly collected about you.
- While a company can assist you in amending an inaccurate credit report, it is illegal in the US to pay for such services upfront.
- In all cases you have the right to correct any false information recorded on your credit report. In most case you have the right to see all information that a credit bureau has about you. In the US the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) has been enacted to promote accuracy, fairness, and privacy of information in the files of every consumer reporting agency. This Act give the consumer the right to see information that a credit agency has collected about you and the right to see that any inaccuracies are corrected.
- If there is wrong information recorded on the information collected by a credit agency, the record can be corrected for free. Therefore there is no need to hire a company to assist in this regard.
- Don't believe any one who says that a segregated file (or a second file) can be created for you. These claims are false.
- Inform yourself as to your rights in your country as to what you can do and can't. Ask your local credit bureau what can be done about any information on hand such as whether you can offer an explanation about any negative information or how long will the information remain on the record before it can be erased at law.
- Contact your local credit agency and find out what information has been collected about you to determine whether any information is incorrect.
